WFH, WTF? How Remote Workplace May Be the New Norm After COVID-9

March 25, 2020 by Editorial Staff

For weeks, recent Work From Home converts lit up Twitter with memes highlighting the bizarre new normal that much of the work is adjusting to. Dogs barking during calls with investors? Kids living out Where’s Waldo on mom’s Zoom call? Armwrestling over devices with spouses and kids needing to turn in distance learning assignments?

Plenty of smart folks have offered insight and resources for organizations looking to cultivate connection.

Dion Hinchcliffe, Constellation Analyst and ZDNet contributor published, “Revisiting How to Cultivate Connected Organizations in an Age of Coronavirus” on his blog. Hinchcliffe details the history of the concept of Enterprise Social Network (ESN) and why now is the time to create true community in organizations, implementing them fully into modern enterprise strategy.

Barbara Z. Larson, Susan R. Vroman, and Erin E. Makarius write in Harvard Business Review, “A Guide to Managing Your (Newly) Remote Workers.” While the authors identify the need for providing technical options for connecting and a daily check-in – they also call for managers to provide emotional support and recognize that some workers may suffer from a sense of isolation.

The work-life balance is now topsy-turvy- for now – but what does this portend for the COVID-19-free future?

Rebekah Bastian, who has held roles in community and culture at Zillow and recently published “Blaze Your Own Trail” argues that the shift has potential to improve the work environment. Bastian suggests that the sense of shared experience, the normalization of parenting, and increase in work flexibility might be the silver lining of the current crisis.

Certainly, the common theme has arisen in much of the response we see – that virtual community is a necessity, and one that is getting so much needed attention now that it’s physical counterpart is impossible.

March 25, 2020 by Editorial Staff

Colorado Springs-based video software firm BombBomb is aiming to help educators by offering their software to teachers for free during the COVID-19 crisis.

As teachers around the country (and world) shift lessons to virtual formats, many are learning about tools beyond the now-ubiquitous Zoom that can be useful in distance learning.

The company allows users to add a video component to emails through a pretty straight-forward interface. It’s a simple and clever way for teachers to personalize assignments and lessons, and provides a familiar face – literally – during a time when folks are disconnected by design.

Javelin Finds Financial Institutions Not Ready for Modern, Global Threats

March 17, 2020 by Editorial Staff

In new research sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton and conducted by digital finance analyst firm Javelin Strategy & Research, the current state of financial institutions’ threat landscape is rather alarming.

The research firm finds that today’s businesses need to look view cybersecurity threats as essentially asymmetrical warfare.

The full report can be downloaded here, but key findings are:

  • Economic and political interests can underpin state-sponsored cyber-threats as financial institutions function as lucrative targets
  • Cloud deployments can complicate operations if strategy is not considered thoroughly
  • “Crypto-jacking,” malware hosting, and command-and-control infrastructure attacks are serious threats and should be considered/prepared for as seriously as data breaches
  • Wiper and ransomware attacks are looming and FIs are not prepared to prevent them
  • Authentication is a source of concern, with 40% of FIs worried about unauthorized access.
  • Multi-cloud environments can invite vulnerability, whether by a likelihood of poor configuration management or simple weak understanding of cloud environments.
  • Security teams have a real opportunity to embrace automation.

Orchestrated Risk Management Provider ZeroNorth Secures $10M in Series A+ Funding

March 16, 2020 by Editorial Staff

Funding VC CXO Spectrum

Boston-based ZeroNorth announced today $10 million Series A+ funding. The round was led by Crosslink Capital, with existing investors ClearSky, Rally Ventures, and Petriollo Capital participating.

The company launched in April 2019 with an initial $10 million, and by orchestrating many vulnerability scanning tools, ZeroNorth centralizes security within application security, development, and security operations.

CEO John Worrall said that the funding will enable companies to improve development and security, saying, “Software security has never been more important, but it’s never been this challenging either. Development and security teams are pushed apart by the need for speed, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Security teams can rise to the challenge and speed of DevOps, and orchestration across the development lifecycle is the answer.”

EMA Research and MobileIron Find Passwords Still the Biggest Security Vulnerability in New Study

March 16, 2020 by Editorial Staff

Despite developments in identity management and authentication, recent research found passwords are still commonly used despite their vulnerabilities. Sponsored by MobileIron, Enterprise Management Associates security and authentication analyst Steve Brasen found that 42% of security teams report organizational security breaches due to user password compromise.

Additional findings of note:

  • The username/password continues to be the dominant method of authentication used to access business devices, apps and data.
  • The password is still the top attack vector for organizations of all sizes, with 42% of respondents indicating their organization had been breached as a result of a user password compromise.
  • Poor password hygiene is also a top cause of data breaches, with 31% of respondents indicating their organization had been breached as a result of user credentials being shared with an unauthorized peer.
  • Phishing attacks, which are designed to harvest employee credentials, are prevalent. Twenty-eight percent of respondents indicated their organization had been breached as a result of a successful phishing attack.
  • IT and security managers are most confident in the ability of hardware tokens/security keys, thumbprints, and mobile devices to prevent access-based security breaches, compared to other authentication methods like passwords and PINs.
